CHANG MAPPER
============

(C) 2011 MAD PRODUCTIONS

EDITOR AND GAME WRITTEN BY:
JOONAS LINDBERG (THE MAD SCIENTIST / HOKUTO FORCE)

Chang Mapper is a map editor with which you
can create a 100 screen playing area for the
game Chang's Adventure.

This program was originally created for the
Chang's Adventure Map Design Compo. Although
no entries were sent to the compo, creating
the editor was a good idea anyway because
it made it easier for me to create the map
for the game. ;) You, too, can still create
maps with this editor and use them in the
disk version of Chang's Adventure!

Some features have been added to Chang Mapper.
They were originally left out because I was
expecting to receive at least one compo entry
on which I would have manually added exit room
information and stuff.

INSTRUCTIONS
============

Chang Mapper was designed to be user-friendly.
All instructions couldn't fit in the small
text area that was dedicated to the
text, so the rest is explained here:

Use joystick in port #2 to move the cursor
around. Fire button places the current tile.

The other keys are as follows:

L - Loads a map (= full 100 screen set)
     from disk

S - Saves a map to disk. NOTE: only one map
per disk, so if you design several maps,
you must save them on separate D64s.
(Another reason why using the real C64
     is not recommended! :D )

P - Place Chang in this room.
If you chose this option by mistake and
want to cancel, just press any key
     (instead of fire)
Just don't go looking for an 'any' key
     in your keyboard, OK? :)

T - Type in number of desired tile

Q - Select tile. If you choose the treasure
or enemy tile, you can only pick the
first variation of them - to use the
others, you must use the 'next tile'
     and 'previous tile' keys

R - Type in number of desired room

Y - Go UP in the map

H - Go DOWN in the map

G - Go LEFT in the map

J - Go RIGHT in the map

A - Toggle 'flagged' tiles mode
(see the later part of this
      doc for more info)

I - Information & settings for the exit room

W - Show or hide 'flagged' tiles

+ - Next tile
- - Previous tile

The tile you are currently drawing is shown on the
bottom right corner of the screen. The status bar
on the right side of the screen also shows the
room where Chang has been placed, and then the
room that you are currently in.

There are three types of swordsmen in Chang's Adventure:
two of which will throw a sword at you, and one which
doesn't throw a sword at all (the green guy).

All swords, including yours, fly a distance of 2 tiles.
So to avoid being hit by the sword, the player must run
onto the 3rd tile. Please keep this in mind when
designing the map, because players will surely appreciate
a game that is actually possible to complete! :)

Treasure tiles simply give a bonus of 2 % to the player.

The game has a final boss fight against an evil Warlord.
Defeating the boss gives you points. And so does
completing the game.

The scoring is as follows:

KILLING A SWORDSMAN - 1
PICKING UP TREASURE - 2
DEFEATING THE BOSS - 3
COMPLETING THE GAME - 5

There is a key tile in the tiles. This tile should be
placed in one of the rooms. This key unlocks the
Warlord's temple, allowing the player to enter the
final boss fight. When the player has defeated the
final boss, he must find the maze exit. Entering this
exit means total completion of the game.

The editor is quite 'flexible' in that it allows you
to do just about anything - you can even place the
player on a non-0 tile, even though this is not
recommended. :)

The only thing that is checked when you are about to
save your work, is how many key tiles have been placed
on the map. There may only be one key, or the editor
won't let you save. If you haven't placed a key tile at
all, the editor will also warn you and won't save until
you place it somewhere.

For the player to be able to exit the maze and complete
the game, the 'exit room' and the direction of the
exit must be defined in the editor. Pressing the I key
brings up an information screen which shows you the
location of the exit room, and the direction of the
exit. You can change them here.

Enter the room number of the exit room with the numeric
keys, delete with INST/DEL, and press RETURN when
ready. Then, set the direction of the exit. Highlight
a direction with joystick UP / DOWN, select it with
FIRE.

For example: if you want the player to see the ending
when he goes to the RIGHT from ROOM 1, then you would
set the EXIT ROOM as 1 and the DIRECTION as RIGHT.

Also related to the exit room: 'flagged' tiles. These
are special tiles that have a certain 'flag' bit
enabled - tiles, that are shown as empty spaces when
you have defeated the Warlord in the actual game.
To enable or disable flagged tiles, press the A key.
Note that you can only place flagged tiles on the
exit room.

To reveal flagged tiles, press the W key. Press it
again to hide the tiles. When the 'show flagged tiles'
mode is on, all flagged tiles are shown as empty
spaces, and the border glows in various colours.

The map should also include a 'temple' - this is the
Warlord's Temple that Chang must enter, in order to
win the key to the island gate from the Warlord. See
'The Temple.PNG' to see what the temple is supposed to
look like. You need to do it as shown on the picture
in order for the main game to recognise it as the
temple.

THE COMPO
=========

The compo has already ended, but I decided to leave
this bit in for... 'historical' reasons, I guess.
Here you can see what you were supposed to know if
you took part in the compo.

------------------------------------------------------

Chang's Adventure Map Design Compo is a compo where
you have the unique chance of being part of the
development of the game! You can design a 100 room
map with Chang Mapper, and then send it to me.
If the map meets the requirements below, it is a
possible winner candidate.

Requirements:

* All 100 rooms used

* Player should be able to score at least 93 %
  (see scoring above)

* Must be completeable! (Possibly the most important
  --------------------- requirement ;) )

* Must contain a Temple in one of the rooms. You
can see the picture of the Temple in the included
picture file, The Temple.PNG. When the player has
picked up The Temple Key, the gate leading to
  this temple is unlocked.

The compo starts officially on 7th June, and ends on
22nd June, 2011.

If no entries are received during that period, I
(the author) shall design a map for the game
myself.

CLOSING WORDS

or PM me at Lemon64, where I'm also a member ;)

Compo entries should also be sent to the above e-mail
address.

Finally: have a great time designing the Chang map! :)

TMS over and out!
