Code Name Mat II
================
In this excellent sequel to Codename Mat, Mat's mission in his new ship
Centurion II is to continue his battle against the Myons and protect Earth's
source of Kirillium from the mines in Vesta. Kirillium is the most
precious substance in the universe, one pinch can turn barren desert into
fertile land.

The Karillium mines on Vesta get their energy from a star via a grid of
satellites. The amount of Kirillium mined is directly proportional to the
energy transferred this way. It is up to Mat to maintain the four rows of
satellites by moving them around and repairing them. A failure of energy
on Vesta results in the miners having to leave, and it is Mat's job to
prevent this.

Additionally, he must deploy the correct weapons on Centurion II to eliminate
the Myon enemy and use the Battle Computer to track the Myons and repair
damage to his craft after attack waves have been eliminated.

Status
YELLOW No damage and not under attack
GREEN System damaged or malfunctioning but not under attack
RED Aliens in quadrant
FLASHING RED Centurion in danger of imminent destruction. This can be due
                to one of three situations.
                1. Aliens in quadrant and one or more shields down.
                2. Weapon system overheating and in danger of exploding.
                3. Centurion travelling at warp speed with front shield down
                (off).

Warp
----
To choose to warp you must first select the compass bearing Angle of your
travel and your Warp Factor. Press W to warp. With the selection of a very
high Warp Factor, you may find yourself in the middle of an attack. Press
CAPS SHIFT W to abort warp. When you are stationary check the Quadrant Grid
Map to find your new position.

Shields
-------
The Centurion has four shields; front, back, left and right sides. The status
(on/off) is displayed on the right of the control panel. Often a shield will
flash when damaged, if so try to keep the attackers on the opposite side to
the damage, as more will result in the destruction of the Centurion.

Safety
------
This simply reduces the chance of destruction by human error. If the front
shield is down it will abort a warp and if a weapon system is overheating
it will disable that. However, there are situations when Safety is better
off.

Batteries
---------
The Centurion has two banks of batteries, one on each side of the ship. This
is the ship's energy supply to shields, engines, weapons etc. Watch your
energy level, as it will fass if the batteries become damaged.

Reactors
--------
The Centurion has two nuclear reactors which feed energy to the batteries.
Damage to the reactors means they will take longer to recharge.

Battle Computer
---------------
This gives the range of the Myon tracked and it's position relative to the
Centurion. On the left of the Screen is the Range Meter which shows the
distance between the Centurion and the Myon. The needle will drop as
distance decreases. The red section indicates that the Myon is within Combat
range.

As you are under attack by a Myon fleet it could be that the ship you are
tracking is not the closest to you. By pressing A the Battle Computer will
switch to each of the closest attacking ships so you can dispense with them
first. Some attack waves of Myons will use cloaking devices that make them
invisible, the Battle Computer can find them even when you can't see them!
The Myon ship is shown as yellow if it is in front of you and blue
if behind, you must manoeuvre until it is in front of you. You have two
types of weapons, plasma or laser; lasers use more energy but are easier to
use. Press E to swop. Pressing A to find the nearest Myon, if a Myon ship is
shown in the red section of the range meter it will be in your sights but
shooting at you, you must rotate until it is in front of you (yellow).

Target Computer
---------------
When operational, sights appear which aid your combat. There are two ways
to use them:

AUTOMATIC This is best used when being attacked by more than one Myon
at a time. When they close in on you, the sights will expand
when the nearest Myon is within range of your weapons.
(Note: As your weapons only shoot in a forward direction,
Myons to either side or behind you will be ignored, even
though they may be closer than the one in front.)

MANUAL This is best used when being attacked by a single Myon as the
sights will expand only on this single attacker. The sights
expand when the Myon is within shooting distance but not
necessarily directly in front of you.

Long Range Scan
---------------
Needed when the Battle Computer is malfunctioning. This looks down on the
Centurion and the Quadrant it is in showing Myon ships, plasma balls and
satellites relative to the Centurion (shown as the central point). You can
move up and down to assess vertical positions.

Short Range Scan
----------------
This shows the space around Centurion rather than the whole Quadrant. When
Myons appear as quite close in the Long Range Scan you can switch to short
range, very useful when in combat with several Myons.

Quadrant Chart
--------------
This shows the status of the satellite energy grid, the position and number
of Myon fleets and how many ships in each fleet, and the position of the
Centurion. Satellites are white but change colour through increased damage
from yellow, cyan, green, magenta, red and then to total destruction.

Warp
----
Warp engines are used for travel between Quadrants. The Course Computer must
be programmed with the required distance and angle. Shields must be
on before using warp, to omit the front shild will result in extreme
danger.

Programming Warp
----------------
When the Quadrant Chart is on the screen the Warp distance and Angle can be
set. The Warp Factor is between 0 and 6 (moving from one satellite to the
next is 1 warp factor, if moving diagonally allow for extra distance). The
Angle is a compass bearing between 0 and 359 degrees. The cursor is moved
left and right between the Warp Factor and Angle using keys SHIFT and Z.
Adjust with keys X (minus) and C (plus). To scroll through keep pressed.

Damage Report and The Droids
----------------------------
The Centurion has two droids to repair damaged systems. The Damage Report
shows the percentage damage taken by each system, which are disabled and
which ae being repaired (systems are disabled during repair). Use one or
two droids to repair the worst damage, they work singly or as a pair. See
Detailed Operating Instructions for controls. If a system has failed it is
marked with an asterisk and shown as 0%. Droids may also repair each other
in the event of damage.

End of Wave
-----------
At the end of an attack wave you will have time to repair the Centurion and
damaged satellites. Although it is vital to have a functioning ship, it is
important to repair or move satellites as a malfunctioning one from any row
will stop the whole row supplying energy to the mines and when all four are
broken energy will cease and the game will be over. You may move
satellites into a broken row with a cursor.

As you progress to higher attack waves the Myons will damage the
satellites more quickly.

Saving Game
-----------
You may save your progress through the game at any point.

Connect your cassette recorder to the computer for recording and start a
blank cassette. Press SHIFT and P and the game will be saved.

To load it back load the main program then place your saved game tape into
the machine. Press SHIFT and O and the game will load.

Getting Started
---------------
You are looking out of Centurion II's cockpit. Select your Defensive
Shields (press D), Safety Mech (press F) and Target Computer (set to auto,
press T) to protect your ship. If you turn your screen to the Quadrant
Grid Chart (press Q) you will see a grid of 24 satellites. Centurion II is
the flashing cross, the Myon ships are the dots which in the first wave are
grouped in fleets of three. If you are within a quadrant which has a Myon
fleet in it, Status will become red (showing that you are in danger of
attack), you must counter-attack. If you are not within a Myon occupied
quadrant you may either wait whilst the Myons 'home in' on you, or Warp
towards them.

Combat
------
If Status is red prepare for combat. Turn on the Battle Computer (press B)
to the locations of the Myons. On the left of the screen is the Range Meter,
red means a Myon within range. If they are out of range go to top speed
(press 5), pressing A indicates the nearest ship. Stay at 30% speed in the
green area of the Range Meter then you may derease speed if you wish while
fighting. Combat at zero speed is not recommended. You may swap weapons with
E. Carry on until you have eliminated the wave, then you may assess damage to
your ship and the satellites. Look out for red on your status screen as you
are being attacked again!

Set the Droids to work on damage, and eventually you must rearrange the
satellites to keep the energy source flowing for the mines.
